In this interview, we have Ai Kaji, a web designer who loves creating texture artworks for Fireworks. She will share some valuable insights on Fireworks.
To begin with, who are you and where are you from?
I am Ai Kaji, (nickname:indigo), a web designer living in Nagoya, Japan.
What do you work as in your day job?
I design and develop web sites for freelance.
Firstly, i love your resource website on Fireworks textures. Can tell us more about it? Thanks!
Many people can make styles and textures for Fireworks by themselves, if they have much time and motivation. But, I think that they do not have time, because they are so busy at work.
I am glad if their design work can be helped by using my styles and textures:-)
What type of projects do you work in Fireworks and are there any challenges you faced that Fireworks have helped you? I use Fireworks for the design of the website, the smartphone site and the drawing illustration. Fireworks helps me all the time. Maybe I can't create the websites without Fireworks.
How long have you been using Fireworks?
I use Fireworks for about 8 years now.
Why should a designer use Fireworks?
Fireworks is built for doing Web and user interface designs. The designer can use the tools intuitively as there are many workflows that allow the designer to do things much faster.
Tell us why Fireworks is your preferred choice for doing user interface design / web design?
When design web sites, I can easily reuse the parts such as an object or the button many times.
Fireworks excels as a rapid prototyping tool. How does Fireworks helps you in your daily design workflow?
1. I can work on one document file from making a wireframe to completing a design.
2. I can work efficiently, because both vector data and image data can be edited.
3. I can make user interface elements into a library and reuse them.
4. I can create many pages and use the Master Page to share a common design base.
What is your favorite workflow in Fireworks and why?
I have fun structuring a wireframe from the start before getting into the design of a web site. Whenever something begins, I feel excited.
If you can only list 5 favorite best features in Fireworks, what will they be?
1. Symbols
2. Pages
3. Rectangle Roundness
4. Vector masks
5. Live Filters
Many people compare Photoshop with Fireworks. What is your viewpoint in this?
I have views as to the respective merits of Photoshop and Fireworks. Photoshop is suited to expression of art while Fireworks is suited to make a prototype.
I think it is the best way to choose the better tool by project, without comparing Fireworks with Photoshop simply on features.
Fireworks work even better with fireworks extensions. What are your favorite extensions from other developers and how do you use it in your work?
PI_Utility
It is convenient when making a wireframe.
Sunburst
I use it for the background of the banner design.
Do you develop your own Fireworks commands?
Nothing much.
Do you have a Fireworks tip for the Fireworks community?
Here are my materials and please let me introduce.
